Firefighters have contained a blaze which spread over grass and scrub after engulfing a tractor in South Otago this afternoon.

Four appliances, three tankers and at least 15 firefighters were called to the blaze in Waiwera South just after 4pm today.

It appeared the fire started in a tractor and spread on to neighbouring grass and scrub before being contained.

It burnt an area roughly 1.5ha.

Contractors were working on the site making straw bales when the blaze started.
