Firefighters' skills on show

The skills of firefighters, seen cutting into crashed vehicles, will be put to the test at an event in Balclutha next Sunday.

The Otago-Southland crash rescue competitions will involve four teams - Balclutha, Milton, Cromwell and a composite side drawn from throughout the two provinces.

Milton station officer and team member Brian Cowie said teams would face three scenarios and exercises during the event, to be held at the Rosebank Wenita sawmill, just south of Balclutha, on November 1.

Each scenario would present teams with different challenges. The aim was to improve skills to deal with real-life situations.

The public is welcome to watch the competition from 8.30am onwards.
