Emergency services use monsoon buckets to help douse a vegetation fire near Lawrence yesterday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Daryl Ball said crews from Balclutha, Lawrence and Waitahuna attended the blaze at Evans Flat, a controlled burn which had spread to a patch of trees.

The call came in shortly after 10.15am and two helicopters supported ground fire appliances.

Crews extinguished the fire shortly after 2pm.

Mr Ball said the size and spread of the fire, on State Highway 8, was unknown.

"We had a report of trees on fire. The information that we had is that three to four controlled burns close to trees have gone into the trees."
