About 450 runners and walkers of all ages turned out in Balclutha’s Centennial Park for the South Otago Rainbow Run in perfect race conditions.
Race convener Craig Gordon, of Sport Clutha, said the good weather had helped make for a record attendance.
‘‘The weather helped bring people out today, but we’ve also refined the course to be interactive and user friendly, making it an event everyone can take part in.
‘‘It’s been nice using both parks [Centennial and Naish] to give people a range of terrain.’’
The event raised funds for Sport Clutha charitable programme Sporting Chance.
‘‘Sporting Chance gives disadvantaged children the opportunity to take part in sport where otherwise they might not be able to.
‘‘Typically the money raised goes towards fees and footwear, and we’re noticing even more demand than ever right now.’’
He said he and his team enjoyed running such an accessible community fitness event.
‘‘Everyone has a smile on their face today, which puts a smile on our face.’’
A smile peeking out from a head-to-toe rainbow of multicoloured paint powder, Balclutha runner Eva Smith said she, twin sister Meg and friend Zoe Ludemann had enjoyed the morning.
‘‘We last did it when we were little, so I don’t remember much from last time.’’
The event had doubled as fitness training for the under-12 Otago touch squad members.
‘‘We’ve got touch in Invercargill all day tomorrow, so today’s been a bit different. Heaps of colour and great fun.’’
