Each team had three scenarios and worked under time limits to free both mannequins and live "patients", and were judged by firefighters and emergency medical staff.

Guest team Rolleston won the overall competition, with host Milton winning the Otago-Southland competition.
The weekend beforehand, the Milton team took part in a crash rescue competition in Rangiora as a guest, winning the overall grade and beating seven other teams in the inaugural Canterbury provincial crash rescue competition. Host team Rangiora was tied with Rolleston in the Canterbury road crash rescue competition.
Milton Volunteer Fire Brigade crash rescue team leader Brian Cowie said the team had worked well and hard on the challenges. Overall crash rescue results: Rolleston 1765, 1; Milton 1552, 2; Balclutha 1368, 3; Queenstown 1051, 4.
