No extra cost for recycling

The Clutha District Council has some good news for ratepayers on the new Clutha recycling scheme.

The district's new solid waste contract has just been settled and despite the recycling scheme's introduction next year, there will be no extra cost to ratepayers.

District assets manager Jules Witt said the contract was awarded to Delta Utility Services Ltd for $4.2 million, about $2 million (32%) below the engineer's estimate of $6.2 million.

The contract is for the operation and maintenance of the Mt Cooee landfill, transfer stations and skip sites, as well as the kerbside collection of waste and the introduction of a kerbside recycling collection.

Mr Witt said that because the successful tender was low, the council could keep the wheelie bin rate about the same and roll out kerbside recycling service at no extra cost to.

The service will start in April. An extra wheelie bin - the same size as the current large wheelie bin - would be delivered in March to all existing wheelie bin customers, and waste and recycling kerbside collections would alternate, with residents still putting out one wheelie bin each week.

Glass would be excluded from recycling and recycling drop-offs would be extended to all transfer station sites and Mt Cooee.
