A man died in a single-vehicle crash which closed State Highway 93, between Mataura and Clinton, for much of yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the scene between Dodds Rd and Hurst Rd, about 10.15am.

A Hato Hone St John ambulance, an operations manager and a rapid response unit were sent, along with two Fire and Emergency New Zealand appliances from Clinton and Gore, and a medical first-response vehicle from Clinton.

A police spokeswoman said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle.

Much of the traffic on the highway was diverted along State Highway 1, but many larger vehicles were trapped for most of the day while the serious crash unit examined the scene and the road was cleared. The road reopened just before 5pm yesterday.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing, she said. — Allied Media
