Nurses urged to return

Nurses who have let their registrations lapse will be targeted and encouraged to renew their qualifications to potentially return to work and bolster nursing stocks in Clutha as part of September's community wellness programme.

The Otago Southern Region Primary Health Organisation (PHO) will hold a series of information evenings around the district aimed at getting former nurses and health professionals to update their registrations so they could be used to fill staff shortages.

PHO recruitment co-ordinator Irene Mosley said nurses are valued professionals and all Clutha health organisations are keen to have more nurses for part-time, full-time and casual work.

The information evenings will show what is involved in updating nursing qualifications.

The evenings will be held in Balclutha on September 8, Milton September 9, Lawrence September 17 and Tapanui September 18.

Another event planned for the month is a chance for people who have not sung for years to do so without fear of embarrassment.

Claire Stevens, who leads the Dunedin a capella group "Sunny Side Up" will hold a three-hour workshop in Balclutha on September 6.

No auditions will be held and no singing experience is needed.

The controversial issue of elder abuse and neglect will be examined by Age Concern Otago at two meetings on September 17.

One will be held in Balclutha and the other in Milton.

Other events planned for the month include health clinics for diabetes, foot care and hearing, and a Coaches Club presentation with New Zealand Academy of Sport chief executive Kereyn Smith.
