Police numbers in area could rise

Balclutha police could be in for a staff restructure.

Otago coastal area commander Inspector Jason Guthrie said police were considering submissions on a proposal as part of a realignment of staff in the Otago coastal policing area.

No police stations would close and the number of police in the Clutha area would increase if the proposal went through, he said.

Under the proposal, the combined investigation unit at Balclutha could be disestablished to create an additional detective position, while Balclutha would get an extra sergeant.

The current community constable role would be disestablished and be replaced with a public safety team constable.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said that did not mean the town's community constable, Senior Constable Tom Taylor, would lose his position. It was essentially renaming the same position.

Insp Guthrie said the changes were intended to enhance service delivery to the wider Balclutha community.

A final decision on any changes is expected to be made within two weeks.
