Taking on a job with Balclutha police was an opportunity to return home for the station's newest officer.

Sergeant Jason Leadley (40) has been working in Balclutha for a little over two weeks after serving 10 years in Invercargill.

The Balclutha local decided to apply for the position in part so he could move back to his home town.

Not a lot had changed in Balclutha since he left.

''It's still the same small town.''

However, he was impressed with the addition of several new facilities such as the recreation and sports centre.

Sgt Leadley spent eight years with the New Zealand Army before he joined the police force in 2007, where he was stationed in Invercargill.

One of the things which attracted him to the job was the fact no two days were ever the same.

He also enjoyed helping the community.

Rural policing had its own challenges in comparison with urban centres.

However, both had similar goals in terms of its police work.

He wanted to make a difference by helping to reduce offending through prevention.

Balclutha staff were experienced and motivated, Sgt Leadley said, and he looked forward to working with them.
