Mearle Wilson has put a lot of time into embroidering her own quilt for a creative arts exhibition next week.

The 68-year-old Hillend resident and Creative Arts Centre president has spent hours putting together a special quilt of her own design to take part in a exhibition she has helped organise in Balclutha.

The exhibition will feature artwork from South Otago residents and will be split into four  categories — creative fibre, patchwork, the arts and embroidery.

As a member of the embroidery guild, Mrs Wilson has also made cushions and mats for the exhibition.

"I have embroidered one or two things," she said, laughing.

She gets her ideas for her work from other people, books and classes.

It was a fun and relaxing hobby which helped fill in the time.

"I don’t have any spare time because I’m too busy stitching."

Each work took a different length of time to make depending on what it was.

The quilt would have taken "at least a week" for each square in it, as well as the time taken to put it together.

She hoped it would go on her bed at her new house.

Mrs Wilson also made a lot of stitchwork for her children and grandchildren.

She had made a quilt for each one as they left home to go  to university.

She was looking forward to seeing the "amazing" artwork which would be submitted for the exhibition. There were a lot of artistic people in South Otago and no-one was able to see it unless it was put it on display.

The artwork exhibition opens next Tuesday night at the Creative Arts Centre in Clyde St and will run until Sunday.
