Recycling services, memorial among projects

The first serious look into possible ratepayer-funded recycling services was presented to a Clutha District Council group yesterday.

Biobiz was contracted to prepare an Issues and Options report on recycling options for the district.

The council's solid waste working party was briefed on the report.

District assets manager Jules Witt said the report was a comprehensive document and would act as a starting point to help guide the council as it looked to include recycling in its review of the long-term council community plan next year.

Katea memorial: The Catlins settlement of Katea will get a new war memorial as part of a district-wide refurbishment programme nearing its end.

Clutha District Council community services co-ordinator Loesje Morrison said the poor condition of the existing Katea monument meant it needed to be totally replaced.

But the council had arranged for the top part of the monument to be preserved and placed on display at the Owaka Museum.

A re-dedication service for the new Katea memorial will be held later this year.

Naish Park: The band rotunda at Naish Park will not be upgraded as part of a new management plan for the central Balclutha reserve.

The Clutha District Council is poised to adopt the park's reserve management plan at its meeting in two weeks.

The final plan, approved at the district assets committee yesterday, proposes spending $20,000 on improvements to the entranceway and carpark area and $5000 on better signage in the 2009-10 year while a $5000 budget for 2010-11 has been created to look at developing a garden of memories there.

But the council is avoiding a band rotunda upgrade, because of the potential for vandalism and high maintenance costs.

The plan suggests a community group may want to look at that project.

Cemetery signs: It could soon be easier to track down loved ones buried at a Clutha cemetery.

The Clutha District Council hopes to trial an information kiosk and large block numbers at the Kaitangata Cemetery and look at introducing the same features at Lawrence, Balclutha and Milton cemeteries.

The kiosk would house a map of the cemetery, identifying each numbered area.

Each row of headstones would have a small sign at ground level, identifying its row number.

Waihola subdivision: Plans for a major subdivision near Waihola will be discussed at a pre-hearing early next month.

Developers want to create 28 new rural-residential lots on land just north of the township.

The application attracted 11 submissions with seven opposing the project, one in support and three wanting certain conditions imposed on the development.
