Safety barriers cut drivers' visibility

It seems safety barriers recently installed on a Catlins bridge are themselves causing a safety issue.

Clutha District Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt said the council had been approached by locals who said new safety rails installed on the Ratanui Bridge in the Catlins limited drivers' visibility.

''Unfortunately, the work on making the guard rails safe has reduced the visibility through the bridge. As people approach it from each end, they can't actually see if there are vehicles on the bridge.''

Drivers had to slow right down as they approached the bridge as they could not be certain whether they might have to give way.

The safety guards were installed in the past six weeks as the council had determined the previous pipe rails were too small.

Work was also done on the bridge's concrete structure.

Mr Witt said contractors and the council were now exploring options that would retain the safety rails but enable drivers to see the other side when approaching.

''Our consulting engineers and our engineering staff have come up with some options to improve that.''

The council planned to raise the approaches at each end and cut back vegetation.
