Seawall on time, under budget

A project to extend the seawall at Pounawea has been completed.

The Otago Daily Times reported last year that the Clutha District Council had applied for resource consent from the Otago Regional Council to extend the rock wall at Pounawea by 220m.

Work on the previous wall was completed in 2007 but it extended only 485m along the shoreline.

In a council Service Delivery Committee agenda item, service delivery group Manager Jules Witt reported the project was completed on time and slightly under budget at a cost of $73,000.

The extension was completed on May 23.

The project was undertaken by SouthRoads, with the aim of protecting the foreshore and cleaning the shoreline of green waste and rubbish dumped there.

Work was initially delayed due to the resource consent process and Mr Witt was pleased to have it completed on time.

''The extent of the seawall now means that rock protection in this area near the Pounawea township is now complete,'' Mr Witt's report stated.

Locals had also highlighted a significant area at risk of erosion at Newhaven Rd, between the boat ramp and the nearby township.

Concrete rubble and some rock had been put in there in the past but this was more a stopgap measure from a maintenance perspective, Mr Witt told the Otago Daily Times.

''We are likely to need to look at a more permanent erosion control measure in this area in the medium term,'' he said.

A long-term solution for this would need to be considered through the transportation Activity Management Plan and upcoming Long Term Plan process.
