Stretch of road closed by slip

A small stretch of road in Kaitangata has been closed indefinitely after a significant part of the road began slipping away after recent heavy rains.

The stretch of Salcombe St, between Berry and Torquay Sts in the hills overlooking the town, was closed after a small part of the road began giving way on Saturday.

The slip has grown since then.

Clutha District Council communications co-ordinator Jamie Shaw said its roading supervisors were monitoring the situation.

There was no risk to the public, because the land below the slip was farmland, free of houses and buildings.

The slip was noticeable from the road barriers placed on both sides of the road.

Access to all three streets was not affected, as the slip had happened in the middle of the two intersections.

Council contractors were monitoring the slip and would try to stabilise it, Mr Shaw said.

He did not know when the stretch of road would be reopened.

A slip has also forced the closure of Titri Rd at Waihola.

All other roads are now open.
