Success for 71-year-old powerlifter

Veteran Clutha Valley powerlifter Bruce Park set three records at the Oceania championships in Tahiti last month.

The 71-year-old from Greenfield had a stellar 2008, his first full year of competitive powerlifting.

After winning titles at the New Zealand Masters Games and South Island championships, Park travelled to Tahiti to test himself against others his age.

He returned having won the 70-years-plus section for lifters weighing less than 67.5kg.

This effort included having to win all three sections in that class - squat, benchpress and deadlift.

Park not only won all three classes but set Oceania records in the process.

His new marks were: squat, 127.5kg; benchpress, 72.5kg; and deadlift, 155kg; for a combined total lift of 355kg.

Park yesterday said he was thrilled with his efforts, mainly because he had achieved personal bests in each section he entered.
