Police are appealing for people near Taieri Mouth and Waihola to be extra vigilant following an increase in thefts and burglaries.

Acting Sergeant Robin Hutton, of Balclutha, said the new service station at Waihola had been broken into multiple times, with construction tools stolen.

A white Triumph motorcycle was stolen from a shipping container at Finlayson Rd in Waihola, and a wood splitter and a trailer-load of firewood were taken from rural properties.

Snr Const Hutton said the motorcycle stood out because it had a damaged rear mudguard and a distinctive headlight.

"People should be aware there are these people cruising around ... and are being an opportunist taking things.''

He advised people to lock up properly and secure items of value.

Anything which did not appear to "fit with the picture'' of the surroundings was deemed suspicious, and should be reported to police, he said.
