Whitebaiter falls from boat and dies

An elderly Milton whitebaiter died while fishing on the lower Clutha River on Saturday.

Police released his name yesterday.

He was Jackson Douglas Irvine, aged 73.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said Mr Irvine was in a boat on the Matau branch of the river about 4.30pm when he had a medical episode, thought to be a heart attack.

After he fell from his boat, whitebaiters fishing from a nearby boat jumped in and pulled him from the water.

Members of the group took turns trying to revive Mr Irvine, but he died at the scene.

His death has been referred to the coroner.
