Bluff house 'completely destroyed' by fire

A house in Bluff has been gutted by fire this morning.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two crews from Bluff were initially called to a house in Burrow St at 7.54am.

They called in a further two crews from Invercargill to help after seeing how much smoke there was, he said.

The house was fully involved, he said.

One person was taken to Southland Hospital with moderate injuries.

Southland assistant area commander Deane Chalmers said the house was "completely destroyed" but the cause was still being investigated.

“It is undetermined at this point in time. We do have our investigators here, at the scene.”

He said the house was quite unsafe as the fire damaged the “structural integrity” of it.

“The house is completely destroyed at this point . . . the crews are still trying to dampen down and get control of the fire.”

Mr Chalmers said they would investigate if the house had fire alarms but fire crews suspected it was not the case.

“This just highlights the importance of having fire alarms at houses to secure the safety of its occupants.”
