A traditional family camping trip to Te Anau may be routine for the Smith family — but it is not an easy job.

Ali and Amanda Smith, their children, Riley (15), Noah (12), Kohyn (9) and Marley (7) — and then Riley’s boyfriend, Dorian Walker (15), and the dog, Nelly, complete the group.

"As we have a big family, usually we spend the Christmas and Boxing Day at home but the next day we hit the road," Mrs Smith said.

"It’s crazy to sort everything — clothes, camping and sport gears ... The packing is stressful but it’s worth to see the kids’ happiness when we get there.

Mr Smith agreed and said the fireworks on New Year’s Eve is usually a highlight of the trip.

"The kids love to watch it. It is beautiful."
