The Waste Free Wanda show was held at South Alive and provided an opportunity for children to take part in an interactive performance, created by Anna van Riel.
The story line followed the character of Wanda who was an heir of an ancient tribe of earth keepers, Ms van Riel said.
"She [Wanda] becomes a superhero, but she has powers which the children can also have."
Some of the songs in the show encouraged children to use bees wax wraps, and reusable cups and bottles and refrain from using single-use plastics.
The show helped children to find solutions to environmental issues and made them feel empowered, Ms van Riel said.
The event was part of her Southland tour, Ms van Riel said.
"The tour is going well and it’s been nice to see some of the tamariki implement some of the things they have learnt in to the community, their whanau and their schools."
The tour will continue throughout some Invercargill primary schools, and an adapted show will happen at the Invercargill City Library tomorrow, she said.
The day performance was funded by Invercargill City Council, the ILT, Community Trust South and the Creative Communities scheme.
