The Colac Bay toilets have been nominated for an award celebrating the best loo in the country.

They will compete against the toilets from Port Ohope Wharf Permaloo on Eastern Bay of Plenty and Spa Park in Taupo at the Keep New Zealand Beautiful awards, to be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on October 24.

Southland Mayor Gary Tong (left), pictured with project manager Tim Donaldson at the opening of the toilets, said this could be the most different award the region had been nominated for, but he was happy and pleased with the achievement.

''We opened this toilet in July, so it's great the recognition came so soon.''

The Beautiful Awards, run by Keep New Zealand Beautiful, was aimed at celebrating environmental excellence exemplified by communities, businesses, schools and individuals in New Zealand.

Colac Bay's revamped toilets incorporate elements unique to the community, including photographs by local professionals, pencil sketches and text imagery.
