The clocks which were once part of the memorial are now gone.
The restoration work was finally revealed as plastic wrap and scaffolding came down yesterday.
Invercargill City Council parks planning manager Lesley McCoy said the clocks which were formerly mounted on the memorial were a late addition, having been installed in the 1960s.
"They were poorly installed, and had suffered structural and water ingress problems.
"It was decided to restore the memorial to its original appearance — without clocks — including gas ball lanterns."
Work included securing the trooper figure to the memorial, repairs to the gates, installation of lamps to mimic the original lanterns, significant masonry repairs and a lime wash, she said.
The work began in September last year, and while the project had been expected to be completed by February, delays were caused by factors including challenges with supplies and resourcing due to Covid-19.
There were no plans to hold an official unveiling of the memorial, she said.
The restoration project, which has cost about $73,000 so far, was funded through the Provincial Growth Fund.
The memorial is one of seven memorials in the council’s area being restored through government funding.
