Hundreds of kilometres were walked around Invercargill’s Queens Park on Saturday for the Walk for Men’s Health initiative.

Hosted by Awarua Whanau Services, Daniel Johansen Personal Trainer and Walk This Way, the event was family orientated with a BBQ, bouncy castle, bubble mix and live music.

Throughout the course of the day, more than 300km were walked collectively by teams walking 5km each.

Awarua Whanau Services mauri ora kaiarahi Nadine Young said the event was "fantastic", with 17 teams taking part.

More than $1000 was raised and will go to Movember.

"We will be back next year to keep the event going. It will be bigger and better to increase more awareness to support our tane [men] to love longer, healthier lives, mentally and physically."

Mr Johansen said the event was a success and "looked to get bigger" in future years.

He said the event was about raising awareness, and the long-term goal was to create a men’s group in Invercargill where there would be support offered.

"That’s where we are in Invercargill, it hasn’t been done here by the looks of things."

The intention behind the event was to walk 60km over seven hours for the 60 men’s lives lost to suicide every hour worldwide.

Nine-year-old Abigail Morrison from Invercargill said she had fun at the event, and was particularly fond of the bubble making station, as well as listening to the live music.
