Southland children are being taught road safety rules during National Road Safety Week.

Netball team members from the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel and police Constable Marty Lohrey yesterday visited the Rockdale Park Kindergarten in Invercargill to teach children there some skills such as how to put on a seatbelt.

Const Lohrey said it was never too early to start teaching children the key road safety messages.

He said he hoped it provided the children with a good foundation for the rest of their lives.

''Road safety is a building process, so this programme is about teaching them at a very early age how this is important.''
