Power has been restored after large parts of the Invercargill CBD were left without power this morning because of an underground cable fault.

The outage affected the Invercargill inner city and Bond and Mersey Sts.

PowerNet says the fault happened at 10.25am. A little over an hour later it had been restored and the fault was no longer listed on the PowerNet website.

An Otago Daily Times reporter in Invercargill says many of the shops and businesses in the CBD were closed while the power was out.
