Rolling out tribute

Organisers were far from cheesed off as the third annual Whitestone Cheese Rolling New Zealand event spun into action in the hills surrounding Waikaka yesterday.

Perfect weather drew an enthusiastic crowd of spectators and cheese chasers to the Henderson family farm in the Wendon Valley.

Every 30 minutes, a hefty wheel of Whitestone's Windsor Blue cheese, from Oamaru, was launched by celebrities as brave chasers took off after the speeding dairy missile.

The event raises funds to support families in Otago and Southland facing the challenge of raising an autistic child.

The 2009 event was a special tribute to initiator Rosemary Henderson, who died last August. Her husband and the event chairman, Bob Henderson, said organisers were "proud to continue Rosemary's legacy - she would be thrilled".
