He was Stefan Zeestraten (24), of Centre Bush.
Emergency services attended the scene, at Limehills Browns Road in Otapiri, at 3am yesterday.
Mr Zeestraten was the only person in the Toyota Land Cruiser.
Police said yesterday it appeared the vehicle had crossed on to the wrong side of the road and hit a concrete power pole before coming to rest in a ditch.
