A donation of $40,000 by the Otago Community Trust towards fitting out the new Kaitangata Primary School hall is "the icing on the cake" for the project, school principal Joyce Beck said.

The South Otago school was one of 18 Otago organisations to receive a share of $180,000 from the trust in July.

Mrs Beck said the new building, which replaces a dilapidated 100-year-old hall, is a major focus for the Kaitangata community.

The trust money will allow the hall to have new seating, blinds and help equip its kitchen.

"Everyone is looking forward to being able to use it by the end of the year, with the school eagerly anticipating school assemblies, indoor sports and wet day activities, and the rest of Kaitangata having a well-appointed facility available for functions and community events."

The largest single donation by the Community Trust was $55,000 to Dunedin's Civic Orchestra to help with the cost of staging concerts and running education programmes throughout the province.

Other sizeable donations included $15,000 to the Dunedin Theatre Company's WOW Production to help pay for two productions this year, the St Kilda Brass Band to buy instruments, and the Balclutha Bowling Club to fit out its new pavilion after fire destroyed the former clubrooms.
