Snow also blanketed the hills around Clinton and closed the highway from Tuesday evening until 10.30am yesterday.
Forecast snow was expected to close the road again from about 7pm yesterday, said a spokesman from SouthRoads, which is contracted to maintain the road.
West Otago also received flurries of snow late on Tuesday, with most patches disappearing by midday yesterday.
Several motorists were caught unawares by patches of ice on State Highway 1 between Milton and Balclutha yesterday, ending up in ditches, but police reported no serious injuries or incidents.
