Mr Casson will leave in May after seven years in the role, Stuff has reported.
Mr Casson said the timing was right, as a new board of directors is appointed for the Southland Regional Development Agency.
The agency iscombining with Venture Southland, and Mr Casson would help with the transition.
His daughter had just moved to study in Dunedin, and the family would relocate there.
