Environment Southland has advised people to avoid contacting the water in Te Tipua Stream after an effluent discharge in the area.
It said on social media their compliance team had been made aware of an effluent discharge in the Hedgehope, Mabel Bush area in Southland.
The post stated it was making its way into the Te Tipua Stream, and while they did not have all the details at around 9am, they advised avoiding contact with the water.
They also suggested that if anyone accessed the waterway for stock drinking water to find another source.
"As with all incidents, an investigation into the matter has started, however no decision on the outcome can be made at this time."
