Educating, listening and considering what people want from having an Upper Clutha liaison council manager is the immediate task for the new Queenstown Lakes District council employee.

Earlier this year Robyn Steel (52) was appointed to the position and yesterday was her first day in the job.

Ms Steel said she expected the job to "morph and change over time" but it was made clear to her in her job interview for the position the role was to support the Wanaka Community Board and to ensure the board made the most of the opportunities provided.

Governance, engagement and communications manager Naell Crosby-Roe said many people often were not aware that the community board operated within clear terms of reference and with specific delegated authorities.

"Ms Steel’s role will be a bit of an education piece all around, making sure that everyone is clear as to what the Wanaka Community Board should be involved with," Mr Crosby-Roe said.

Ms Steel is expected to have her first meeting with board chairman Barry Bruce today, and other board members and the Wanaka ward councillors this week.

Mr Crosby-Roe said the Upper Clutha liaison council manager would not be involved in day-to-day council operational matters as it was more of a governance support position.

He said she would meet the council executive leadership team and council staff in Queenstown on a regular basis, and help facilitate meetings in Wanaka for Mayor Jim Boult when he visits Wanaka every four to five weeks.

"I fully intend to get to know everyone out and about in Wanaka but it will be on the basis of how I can support the Wanaka Community Board," Ms Steel said.
