Concerns were raised yesterday at the large number of people partying on Ruby Island and the large number making their way to the island on floats.

Queenstown Lakes District Council harbourmaster Marty Black said he was aware of the crowd on the island but so far there had been no reports of any incidents on any of the region's lakes.

Almost exactly a year ago an illegal event was held on Ruby Island, in Lake Wanaka, and emergency services had to escort more than 500 people from the island back to the shore.

Mr Black said both he and his staff would be closely monitoring the behaviour on Lake Wanaka and Ruby Island overnight to ensure there was no repeat of last year's party.
