The presenter at the recent Falcon Club Nationals' prize-giving in Cromwell, jokingly suggested that Wanaka's Daphne Ledgerwood should just stay seated up the front of the room.

It would have saved her the frequently-repeated walk from her table to collect the seven trophies won by her immaculate 1965 Ford Falcon Sprint two-door hard-top coupe at the event held over Easter.

``It was pretty eye-boggling,'' Mrs Ledgerwood said.

No-one was prouder to see her accepting the awards than her husband Jim.

An avid Ford collector, he had been searching the world for this rare model for 10 years, finally finding it a year ago and giving it to his wife.

Parting with ``not that far short of $100,000'' for the Ford was money well spent as far as Mr Ledgerwood was concerned.

Bought new by a Ford company employee, the car's originality was forever cemented by the factory-fitted extras he ordered.

It is the only one of its kind built with the 1956 Ford colour Fiesta Red and Soft White interior. A further 13 factory options include a Sprint steering wheel, bucket seats and console, and dual exhausts.

The Ledgerwoods are members of the Otago Early Ford Falcon Club and enjoy travelling to Ford events.

It was Mr Ledgerwood who took the wheel for the Easter trip to the nationals as the Ford Sprint's 289cuin (4.7-litre) V8 engine, with factory-installed triple carbs, was ``pretty powerful'', Mrs Ledgerwood said.

Some of Mr Ledgerwoods' Fords are displayed at Wanaka's Warbirds and Wheels museum and although the Sprint may end up there, it will always have Mrs Ledgerwood's name on its ownership papers.

``She's a keeper,'' he said, of the car.
