Plans for a cluster of up to 10 food trucks on a picturesque piece of land at the edge of the Wanaka CBD are on hold.

The Brownston St land runs along both sides of Bullock Creek and belongs to the Teat Family Trust.

Casey Teat, of Wanaka, told the Otago Daily Times on Sunday while tidying up the section he had been approached by food truck owners seeking space.

''We've just decided to maybe embrace that concept and look into the possibility of creating a home for them.''

He had explored the idea of a ''food-truck garden'' and submitted a resource consent application to the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

However, he had put the application on hold while he waited for a change of zoning for the land, something signalled by the council.

The land is in an area zoned high density residential but the council has suggested the zoning be changed to ''medium density with a town centre transitional overlay'', Mr Teat said.

That would make it easier to use the land for commercial purposes.

''We just decided that we would wait for that to naturally happen rather than sort of push it earlier than need be.''

The trust's resource consent application says the land would be used as a permanent space for current and future food trucks and stalls.

''Green space and planting will break up the visual impact of the stalls and a landscaped garden will flow down to the edges of Bullock Creek.''

Visitors would be encouraged to ''dine in a garden environment on furniture and grassed areas provided''.

Mr Teat said he had received ''lots of good feedback'' and was ''pretty excited'' about the concept.

At present, several food trucks use a piece of Chinese-owned land on the other side of the street.
