Old station's new tenant revealed

Outdoor clothing retailer Macpac will be the new tenant of the old Wanaka fire station building in Ardmore St.

The news comes as part of a resource consent application by the station's owner, Ngai Tahu, to alter the building in order to accommodate a retail tenant.

The application was granted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The fire appliance glass doors at the front of the building will be replaced with a large glazed window and glazed automatic opening doors.

The rest of the shopfront will have a red cedar finish.

Macpac was founded in Christchurch in 1973 and has stores in New Zealand and Australia, including in Queenstown and Dunedin.

The former fire station has been vacant since the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade moved to its new headquarters in Ballantyne Rd in August 2016.

The lease was made available for purchase last November.

Local environmentally-friendly business Earth Collective had made a last-ditch effort to secure the lease but was unsuccessful.

Earth Collective founder Florence Micoud could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
