A police spokeswoman said emergency services from Wanaka were called to the crash site about 500m from the Crown Range summit on the Wanaka side, at 2.45pm.
Both occupants of the vehicle freed themselves and were not injured.
Traffic was restricted to one lane while the crashed vehicle was removed.
Passing motorists checked on the pair and controlled traffic before emergency services arrived.
Complaints about driving are being made to Wanaka police daily, and at times hourly, particularly about drivers on the Crown Range road.
Wanaka police station spokeswoman Katherine Wilkinson said the complaints ranged from driving too slowly to driving too fast and overtaking on blind corners.
She said many tourists were not prepared for how busy and congested the road was at this time of year and the narrow and winding nature of the road often caused issues for rental car drivers.
``We had a complaint about a rental car driving completely on the wrong side of the road which resulted in the rental car company cancelling the driver's contract and them having to find other transport.''
Passing on blind corners was a common complaint and drivers needed to be patient, take care and wait until they had 100m of clear visibility before overtaking, she said.
Complaints about bad driving can be made by ringing *555 or in writing or in person at a police station. They must include the registration number of the vehicle.
