A music performance at the Mount Aspiring College (MAC) music suite on March 21 received warm praise from Wānaka Concert Society members.

The college’s 15-piece Classical Chamber Group, accompanied by tutors Nikki Cotter, Johanna Hansen and conductor Helen Carter, impressed with performances of works by Johann Strauss and Gioachino Rossini.

The MAC Jazz Combo then provided stirring renditions of jazz classics.

Wānaka music patron and society member Lyn Milne said the performance was "a promising sign" for the jazz ensemble, as the musicians gear up for a national competition later in the year.

Next up was Meela Sergeant, a recent MAC pupil, who gave a solo performance on the Kawai grand piano, gifted to the school by the society.

The event also included a guided tour of MAC’s impressive new arts facility by the proud pupils, and refreshments.

Principal Nicola Jacobsen, MAC head of music Mat Doyle, and society president Kate Lovell welcomed the audience and thanked members for their continued support.

The society is planning more concerts, featuring both New Zealand and overseas artists, throughout the year. Find info at wanakaconcertsociety.org.nz
