The body of water, known as Lake Aubrey or the Northlake Pool, reappeared at the entrance to Northlake yesterday morning after heavy rain.
Queenstown Lakes District Council contractors Whitestone had only just completed testing of the soil for drainage and were due to start expanding the soak pits yesterday morning, the contractors said.
Construction foreman Hamish McLean said "unfortunately the gods have not been on our side. We were hoping to start digging today but with all that water there, it is not conducive to digging."
Wanaka ward councillor Quentin Smith said flooding along other sections of Aubrey Rd were also on the council’s radar.
He said he had a meeting with engineers on site on Monday to discuss flooding at the Anderson Rd and Aubrey Rd intersection and they were investigating options.
"The timeframe depends on the scope of work, whether it is minor improvements or something more substantial.
"The potential for a piped solution along Aubrey Rd would be a major capital works project if on-site solutions continued to have issues," he said.
Work to increase the existing soak pit near Northlake and associated works is scheduled to take place over the next three weeks.
