Seven KiwiBuild houses in Wanaka’s Northlake suburb, offered for sale in a ballot, have found a buyer — and three have not.

A spokesman for KiwiBuild told the Otago Daily Times yesterday there were ballot entries for all 10 homes.

"One applicant won another ballot drawn the same day, and two ballot winners have chosen not to buy a home.

"Families are in the process of buying seven homes."

The Northlake ballot closed on Sunday after being extended by 10 days at the request of  Northlake developer Chris Meehan, to give people more time to work through the prequalification process.

When the extension was announced on November 2 there were 20 ballot entries, and the KiwiBuild spokesman said there were 52 when the ballot closed.

"Our experience from the early ballots is showing that, while some people are keen to get in early and buy before the home is completed, most want to wait to see the completed home.

"The remaining three Wanaka homes, and other homes that do not sell off the plans, will be sold to KiwiBuild buyers after they are complete."

The 10 Northlake KiwiBuild house and land packages consisted of four two-bedroom and six three-bedroom detached houses costing between $565,000 and $650,000.

They were the first KiwiBuild houses offered outside Auckland.

Housing Minister Phil Twyford announced in September 211 KiwiBuild homes would be built at Northlake over two years to enable "young first-home buyers a crack at affordable home ownership".

The Government plans to build 100,000 affordable homes nationally over the next decade, 1000 of them to be completed by mid-2019.

The spokesman said, as of yesterday, there were over 50 families nationwide who had bought, or were in the process of buying, a KiwiBuild home.
