The past, present and future of New Zealand's first cross-country skifield will be celebrated this weekend when Wanaka's world-class Snow Farm turns 30.

Snow Farm manager Sam Lee said many of those involved in the early years of the Snow Farm will be acknowledged at a special lunch to mark the occasion, including its founders, his parents, Mary and John Lee.

"It was was a labour of love for both of them.''

He said his mother had the dream and the passion to create what was originally called the Waiorau Nordic Ski Area and his father supported her as he saw cross-country as the sport of the future.

Sam Lee's grandfather had farmed the Waiorau Station on the Pisa Range under a pastoral lease since 1924.

In 2012 the Pisa Alpine Charitable Trust (PACT) raised the funds to acquire the snow farm from the Lee family and have operated it as a non-profit charitable trust ever since.

This week Met Service is predicting two weather events will bring much needed natural snow to the southern skifields.

Mr Lee said the snow would be welcome but his grandfather's farming records showed it did not always come.

"Climate is always changing, my grandfather had diaries dating back to 1924 and there were winters where there was no snow on the mountains, but we are building up data to show some of the man-made things we are doing might be having an effect on the weather.''

Snow Farm sales manager Pip Gillespie said this year the Snow Farm has had to limit its trails, but "it hasn't prevented us from doing any of our activities due to the fact that we don't need a large base of snow to operate.''

"We have 55kms of trails and as of about the middle of last week we had 27km of trails groomed.

"We have still been able to cross-country ski and snowshoe since the 21st of June when we opened,'' Ms Gillespie said.

The Snoparty weekend starts at 10am this Saturday and as well as snow-filled games and events it will include a competition to name the Snow Farm's new groomer.
