There are 50 people on the volunteer team, who Community Link manager Kate Murray said collectively contributed 79 hours a week — the equivalent of two full-time roles.
"Their commitment forms the backbone of the organisation. From supporting the food bank operations to helping deliver essential community services, their work is essential to everything the organisation delivers ... we extend our deepest gratitude for their skills, time, energy, and enthusiasm," Ms Murray said.
Foodbank volunteers pack food parcels three times a week, which have doubled in demand over the past year. They also unpack food donations from New World and KiwiHarvest.
They provide twice-weekly support clinics for justices of the peace, delivering about 1000 appointments annually.
Meals on Wheels drivers delivered 5500 meals each year to clients, many of whom look forward to these visits as their primary social interaction, Ms Murray said.
The volunteers also offer a family support programme and community outreach workers and St Columba Church volunteers cook for Wednesday shared lunches, Wana Kai summer barbecues and preparing Wana Soup in winter.
Some volunteers tend community gardens, including those at Community Link.
Senior residents are also offered regular tech help, some volunteers attend to marketing and communications, while others are involved in governance, tend the Community Link Hub front desk and work with the Food for Love group.
Ms Murray said volunteers’ feedback was they enjoyed connecting with individuals and listening to stories.
