More closures expected on glacier road

The rebuilt Fox Glacier valley road might be reopened this week - more than seven weeks after it was wiped out by ex-tropical Cyclone Fehi.

However, the glacier valley faces ongoing challenges, and is expected to close whenever it rains heavily.

"It's been a good week for the contractors in the Fox Valley, with significant progress being made," Department of Conservation operations manager Wayne Costello, of Franz Josef Glacier, said on Friday.

"They have been working pretty exclusively on the causeway lift - of about 2m - across its entire length. The good news is that (at this stage) we are on track to have the road and track open by the end of (this) week."

The team had put in well over 3000 hours of digger and dump-truck work. On top of this, DOC had put in considerable time re-routing the track.

Last week they used a large digger and dumper to make a way for people to safely cross the toe of the Gunbarrel rockfall zone.

"We hope that the completion of this walking track work coincides with the completion of the road - so provided the weather is good we will be open by the end of (this) week."

Mr Costello said it was important to note that the track and valley would be closed during rain as Yellow Creek and Whites Creek would be impassable for most unguided people.

"We have had GNS geologists look at the challenges we have in managing safe visitor access and built-infrastructure in the valley. They have also acknowledged that the valley is extremely dynamic at the moment and this presents some significant risks to preserving stable access into the future."

DOC will host a guided walk into the valley this Wednesday for Fox Glacier operators/businesses and community members to discuss the access issues.
