The Doggone text-alert tags were introduced last year and went out to more than 2200 dogs on the Westland District Council’s books.
So far, more than 50 lost or wandering dogs had been reunited with their registered owner via the external provider.
Doggone chief executive Tracy Austin launched the tag and smartphone app system several years ago with the goal of reuniting 20,000 lost pets with their owners by 2030.
Ms Austin said by consenting to the text reunite service, dog owners could be contacted immediately if their dog was found wandering.
A council report said the system had reduced after-hours callouts for animal control officers.
"For our in-field team, it has proven to be an excellent time-saver, particularly given the widespread nature of our region."
Animal welfare messages were also sent to dog owners.
"For example, all our dog owners received friendly reminders around Guy Fawkes, and we had no callouts during that period, which has helped support responsible dog ownership," the report stated.
Ms Austin said only the owner’s chosen phone number was shared with the finder.
"This direct connection helps dogs get home sooner, reduces stress for pets and owners, supports safer communities, and provides an immediate, easy solution for anyone who finds a lost dog."
