Contractors for the Westland District Council's property company have begun making repairs to the piles and cross-beams of the Jackson Bay wharf.
Westland District Property Ltd chairman Durham Havill says the full upgrade of the wharf is expected to take five years.
A management committee of local fishermen has been appointed for a two-year period to advise the property company. Plans for a new concrete boat ramp have also been completed.
