Submissions have been slow to arrive for the latest wind farm planned for Clutha.

Just two have been received by the Clutha District Council to date but the public still has just under two weeks to lodge their views.

NZ Windfarms Ltd wants permission to construct and operate nine turbines on the ridge line of Mt Stuart, one of the highest points in Clutha.

These will generate about 6MW, enough to supply about 2400 average households.

The site is on the southwestern side of State Highway 8 in the Manuka Gorge, about 15km inland from Milton, on farmland with a diverse topography including rolling hills, ridges, valleys and gullies.

The company wants to create a 15ha development envelope.

Its resource consent application, submitted to the council late last year, said construction of the wind farm would take between six and nine months.

In economic terms, the project is estimated to cost about $15 million with about $4 million of that likely to be "funnelled" into local and regional goods and services.

The wind farm would also contribute to the local distribution network and help lessen the region's reliance on power from the national grid.

Households within 3km to 6km of the site would have more open views of the turbines than others further away, the application said.

"At this distance (3km-6km), the proposal would still be prominent in the landscape, being clearly visible in the view and forming an important but not defining element."

If granted approval, the wind farm would be about 30km south of the Mahinerangi development being pursued by TrustPower.

Public submissions close at 5pm on February 4.
