Te Tipua School pupils (from left) Ollie Nicholls, 9, Ivansin McWilliam, 10, Ariella Yates, 11, Georgia Hammond, 10, and Alex Young, 10, with the food they helped prepare for their hangi.

The whanau of an Eastern Southland school were treated to a hangi to celebrate the end of term yesterday.

Te Tipua School principal Gareth Scott said the pupils had been very involved, helping to dig the pit, prepare the food, and stack the firewood.

Mr Scott said the pupils had ripped up 15 loaves of bread for stuffing to feed about 50 parents at a gathering last night.

Te Tipua resident Adrian Harden offered his hangi-making services and the rest of hard mahi was done by his wife and children. Mr Harden said it was good to teach the school children the process and he benefited from a feed at the end of it.
