A Southland farming contractor who has had petrol stolen from his property four times has brought in the dogs.

Cameron Contracting owner-operator Daryl Cameron praised police efforts this week after 855 litres of fuel were stolen from his Woodlands contracting business.

A man has been arrested and charged in relation to the missing fuel.

Mr Cameron said his business had been targeted four times in a week.

He realised fuel had been stolen after he saw fuel pump nozzles lying on the ground and discovered a fuel tank was missing its lock.

The tank had just been filled, making it immediately obvious something was wrong, he said.

He alerted police and provided them with CCTV footage. Police were on site the next day collecting fingerprints, he said.

“[They were] absolutely brilliant. I could not fault them.”

The theft was a significant loss for a small contracting business.

“It’s a lot of money that we’re not going to see again.

“You can’t make that up … it’s something you’ve got to wear.”

The company had ramped up security significantly and encouraged others who stored fuel to do the same.

He also had a warning to anyone else considering targeting his business … the property was now home to “three big dogs”.

Vigilance was the key, he said.

“The best advice you can give is just be vigilant … if you do see something suspicious, report it.”
