Fashionistas brought a little additional flare to Ascot Park for the Fashion in the Field event at this year’s Christmas races.

Organisers estimate about 5500 people turned out for last Saturday’s races, which they said continued to grow in popularity.

A "Miguel Designs number" won the the Fashion in the Field’s supreme award for Pauline Pattullo, of Banks Peninsula.

It felt "absolutely wonderful" to pick up a sash and it was great to see the diversity in people’s outfits, she said.

"I’ve had the Ascot in my sights for a long time, so I’m really look forward to representing the Southland Racing Club," she said.

Invercargill man Shauen Daly said he only decided to enter the contest quite late.

"I had entered other contests but had never won before, so winning this alongside Pauline has made it a fun day out."

His suit, bought in Sydney, was considered a "smartly dressed" outfit.

Southland Racing Club president Sean Bellew said the races and other attractions on the day had become a destination event.

"People want to be here because the action is the attraction ... and I’m just overwhelmed by how successful it is and how it has survived," Mr Bellew said.

Pressure leading up to the day had been immense with the team "working with wind, the elements and the damage to the property" from the October weather event.

"We’ve all just worked it all out together — and I’m very proud of them because we really are just like a family," he said.

Visitors to the event had travelled from as far as the North Island and Australia.

"This has been my passion project for 18 years, I love the people, I thank them and I’m truly humbled."
